About “Come Inside” by Bruce Chalmer

Come Inside: A Midrash on Genesis 18:1 is a musical work for choir (SATB plus soloists), string trio and piano. Based musically and midrashically on the first verse of Parshat Vayera (Gen. 18:1), Come Inside is a commentary on the development of liberal Judaism: rooted in tradition, but grafting together traditional and modern elements into a living organism.

The work was written for the triple anniversary of Temple Sinai, South Burlington, Vermont, celebrating 40 years as a congregation, 25 years for Rabbi James Glazier, and 20 years in the building.  The premiere performance was held on June 2, 2006 at Temple Sinai.  Other performances include: November 4, 2006, at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue in Burlington; May 19, 2007 at Beth Jacob Synagogue in Montpelier; May 20, 2012 at Temple Sinai; June 3, 2012 at Ohavi Zedek Synagogue (see below for videos from that performance); and, most recently, June 24, 2016 for the 50th anniversary of Temple Sinai.
